Our Planet; Our Home

The Old Testament Prophets often predicted the downfall of Israel unless people changed their ways. Jesus though showed a different way. Yes he was angry when he saw people in power exploiting the poor, e.g. tipping over the moneylenders’ tables in the temple, when they were taking disproportionate amounts of their money to pay for the scraggiest of animals to sacrifice to Yahweh. However Jesus often inspired people into changing their ways. It is easy for us to become overwhelmed by constant negative reports about global warming, pollution, the extinction of species etc. How would Jesus deal with such issues to day? How can we as Christians respond to our growing awareness of the interdependence of all living things? I find it heartening to learn that many church leaders, through the Community Climate Campaign, have now joined together to encourage us to change our ways and become part of the solution rather than remain part of the problem. ‘Churches Together’ now has a 15minute video with ideas of how we can do our bit. It comes with a study guide so is easy to use with any age group. If you or your group is interested please contact Barbara or Marjorie.

One idea suggested by ‘future forests’ is that each air passenger contributes money for tree planting according to the amount of pollution generated by their flight.
