Mission Project 2013

Each year the Mission Committee and the Junior Church choose a charity to support with fundraising efforts for the year. Between September 2012 and August 2013 the chosen charity is The Furniture Station.

This charity was set up in 1994 and is based at Hazel Grove Baptist Church. Its mission is to relieve poverty and distress by the provision of furniture, electrical and household items, for a nominal charge, to individuals and families deemed to be in need throughout the Borough of Stockport. To be eligible for the charity’s help people must be a resident of Stockport (SK1 to SK8) and be directed to the charity by one of the referral agencies the charity works with, for example Stockport Homes, the Council, the CAB and various local social, health and community services. People may then visit the warehouse in Hazel Grove and choose up to six items, which, once paid for, will be delivered to their home.

The charity encourages people to donate their unwanted items and will collect donated furniture and other goods free of charge. These will then be taken to their warehouse where they will be checked, repaired as necessary, then offered to people in need. In addition to a small number of paid staff, the charity has more than 20 volunteers working for it, as well as offering the opportunity for work placements for local unemployed people, enabling them to gain transferrable skills in the labour market.

The charity also provides some new goods - for example, beds, mattresses, kettles.

How can we help The Furniture Station?

We can raise money. The congregation, their families and friends, and the families who come to the Saturday coffee mornings are all asked to help. All the money donated for refreshments on Saturday and Sunday mornings goes towards our mission fundraising. In addition, the children and young people have planted spring bulbs and baked biscuits for sale. You can try to win a prize by entering the new quiz competition. This costs £1.50 for the quiz sheet which is available in the concourse - closing date 31st January. Also, if you have any loose change, please help to fill the sweet jar in the concourse.

The charity also organises fundraising events and details of these will be included in the weekly notices and on the Concourse noticeboard.

We can donate unwanted furniture and electrical goods. The charity will collect these free of charge in the Borough and surrounding areas of East Cheshire. There are certain restrictions about the type of goods the charity may take, for example for fire safety regulations, and they are not able to take gas appliances.

We can spread the word about the work of the charity. If you know of someone who is downsizing or replacing their furniture, please tell them about the work of The Furniture Station, and encourage them to consider donating to the charity. Also, if you know of someone in need, please tell them how to get a referral to the charity.

This way we can help this local charity help people within our community who are struggling with poverty and difficult circumstances, to get the household items they need to turn a house into a home.
