Winter Wonderland and Climate Change

The annual Winter Wonderland, organised by Marple Bridge Community Association draws a great family crowd each year. Children and adults can enjoy the occasion and take part in it. The Fancy Dress parade, merry-go-round, Santa Claus delight the children and the many stalls that line Town Street provide much interest for adults. All this in an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment of Morris Dancers, Clog Dancers, Steel band and Ludworth Primary School Choir singing carols round the Christmas tree.

Whilst the mince pies and mulled wine flowed and all enjoyed themselves, there was also an opportunity to share important issues with folk. The Justice and Peace Group, of Marple and District Churches Together had a stall dedicated to the subject of Climate Change and as a follow up to the successful ECO DAY in November. Literature and energy efficient light bulbs, provided by the Local Authority and other resources from Christian Aid were distributed. It was good to see the ready acceptance of these. But even more encouraging were the number of people who shared with us that they had carried out energy efficiency checks on their homes, and were already using energy efficient light bulbs. There were others who told us how they were exploring ways of saving energy e.g. running their car on spent cooking oil.

This was an opportunity not to be missed to engage with the wider public on a matter of great public concern. We both valued and enjoyed the occasion. Let us hope that in our churches and community we can work together to address the issue of Climate Change. The needs of the poorest in the world will suffer most if we do not.
